C215 is going strong

C215 street art in Barcelona

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’ll have seen several posts about the work by street art artist C215. And that’s really not very surprising, because he visits Barcelona quite frequently, is very good, and is very prolific.

He is star at portraiture and his work reflects the faces of both young and old people he cares deeply about (friends and family) or those that live a precarious life on the streets. Additionally, he also loves to portray cats, and does so with incredible detail and (as with all his work) a great sense of colour. What you might not know, is that he has been doing a lot of large scale work this year, both in his native France and elsewhere. Unfortunately, we don’t have one of his huge pieces (for example such as this one) in Barcelona yet, so Christian Guémy, if you read this… you know what to do! ;)

RICE for breakfast

Stencil art on Barcelona streets by RICE

Antony Perkins – Carrer del Carne

Happy Monday! How about a hearty breakfast to kick-start the week? In Hong Kong (where I lived for 4 years) this would mean a bowl of congee, the main ingredient of which is rice. So let’s have some RICE for breakfast, shall we? Of the kind you can find on Barcelona’s streets.

Who’s that girl? – Carrer del Carme

RICE has been active and I found a few new stencils just the other day, all in El Raval. He or she (doesn’t anybody know anything about this artist?) appears to enjoy making stencil portraits of famous people. Such as these three… Have a wonderful week, everyone!

C215 loves Alice – Carrer Tamarit

I can’t help it, I’m a hopeless romantic. Moved by stories of the “happily-ever-after”, empathetically gutted by those of heart break. Imagine my delight at finding evidence of a love story – graffiti style on the corner of Carrer Tamarit with Carrer Comte d’Urgell! Graphic declarations of admiration and love by C215 and Alice for one another on different sides of the same traffic light control box. Aaaah, how sweet!

To wrap up this artsy week I have some more from Alice for you… You may remember Alice from a former post I dedicated to her? Well in recent times I have spotted more of her work on Barcelona’s streets and have been delighted by it. Have a look, and see what you think…

I <3 cats

Smiley kitten – Carrer Grunyi

I <3 cats. And last Friday I met a really cute cat. It slipped into my front door as I was leaving to catch a flight. Not the best moment to meet a new cat, but I am glad to have met it, because it was a very pretty tabby, with a nice meow and, once it was a little calmer and approachable, seemed like a very friendly one.

Contrasting cats – Carrer Volta dels Tamborets

My heart melted and I would’ve loved to keep it, but I had to be off, to catch that flight I mentioned earlier. What unfortunate timing, right? Long story short, I picked it up and put it back out on the staircase, where it sat, looking at me with its soft, sad eyes, meowing at me ever so softly and plaintively, while I made my way downstairs… Sigh, sigh, sigh!

Smile – Carrer de Joan Massana

I always like a good close-up, be it a photo, a painting or another work of (street) art.  Here are a few I found around Barcelona:  close-up in black and white. Enjoy!

Look – Carrer d’en Tripó

This month, Las Calles Hablan, the first exhibit by Mapping Barcelona Public Art, will take place at Mutuo Centro de Arte.  I thought I’d share some examples of street talk with you here, today, in the form of stenciled texts and images which were placed on Barcelona’s streets to convey a message to the onlooker.

The message may or may not get across in the way it was intended, but certainly adds to the way an artist interacts with their public and communicates their thoughts and feelings about the goings-on in the city (in this case, Barcelona).

C215 beauties

Carrer Sepúlveda

C215 has become one of my favourite stencil artists, and with good reason! His use of colour is superb, and his subject matter confronting in a gentle way. Coinciding with the ‘unveiling’ of a commission in Tudela, I thought it might be nice to share a few of C215 beauties from around Barcelona with you. Enjoy!
