BCN Handmade – Oscar H. Grand

Oscar H. Grand

Today, I am very happy to introduce to you Oscar H. Grand, a charming guy and an excellent tailor who operates out of the shop he has in the Born, on Carrer Barra de Ferro 7.

I met him through a mutual friend, and often run into him on the street, and one day asked him if he would like to be featured in the BCN Handmade section of my blog. To my delight, he said yes, and so last week I visited him at the shop, and in between client enquiries and fittings, shot the images I share with you today.

In progress

Oscar works in a completely artisanal way, where each item of clothing he sells in the shop, be it bespoke or ready-made, is made by hand. It starts with the patterns, followed by the cutting of the fabrics, interlinings, etc. and finally the pieces are assembled by hand to form the creations  he has on display, or which his clients commission from him. Pattern making and cutting is done by Oscar himself, right there, in his shop, while the sewing is done by specialised tailors and seamstresses who work off-site.

Using high quality fabrics imported from Italy and the UK mostly (unfortunately the Spanish textile sector has all but closed down), Oscar applies his craftsmanship to the unique and timeless garments he designs and creates. True contemporary classics, which are full of charming details, and of course made to perfection for each client.

But see for yourself, in the following slideshow, and afterwards, Oscar will tell you in his own words about his work…

Restored and recycled

Carrer Viladomat 30

You probably know by now, that I have something of a soft spot for the handmade and recycled. So you can probably imagine my delight at knowing that a new shop, where furniture is restored and recycled has recently opened. Valnot is its name, and you can find it in the part of town where a lot of new places are sprouting up at the moment (the Sant Antoni area) on Carrer Viladomat 30.

Upstairs workshop

It is a two-level space, with the workshop upstairs and the shop area downstairs. For a nominal fee you can also bring your own stuff to restore or recycle, and make use of the owner’s know-how and tools while you’re at it. Not a bad idea, eh?

The shop is quite full, but all things are displayed with taste and without feeling too cramped. I’ve already spotted a few items I wouldn’t mind having, so no doubt you probably would find something to your liking too. Check out the slideshow for a sneak peek…

Carrer Peu de la Creu 24

On Carrer Peu de la Creu 24 we can find Novedades, a shop I discovered one morning, while having a coffee at Satan’s Coffee Corner, and which is well worth a visit. Why? you may ask… Well, because it sells an interesting range of items which were all made in Barcelona. In fact, most of them were made right there!

Mae and her admirers – Carrer Pas de l’Ensenyaça

Happy Monday! Let’s kick some … this week, shall we? I’m in that kind of mood. Luckily, I have some images to go with that, images of blinds that were painted by Kenor and his pal Pez (you know, the one who does the grinning fishes). But these blinds are not just any old blinds, no! They belong to a shop on Carrer Ferran that specialises in all things  martial arts. Just the thing for me, right now…

Carrer Ferlandina 18

It might be a little odd to do so on a Monday morning, but I am going to suggest you incorporate some siesta time into your schedule. Here’s why: on Carrer Ferlandina 18, in what used to be a haberdashery shop, and where the original wooden furnishings have been (practically) left intact, you will find Siesta, a shop and gallery of objects and works of art made by artists.

Shop + gallery

These objects and works of art have been selected with the greatest care and exquisite taste by Siesta proprietress Mercedes, and which have been displayed around every nook and cranny of the space for best effect. I am delighted to share a selection of these with you in the following slideshow…

Carrer Elisabets 7

Yesterday I got a new pair of trousers, and I got them here, at Medwinds.com. A new shop that has popped up on the corner of my street, and which uses the Mediterranean as its inspiration, and was born out of the belief, that for retail, the internet is the future.

Showroom / online shop

Medwinds.com is not just any run-of-the-mill shop, it is actually a showroom used to showcase the collections they sell online. For those who are willing to provide them with their email address, the online price is charged, and for those who don’t, a higher retail price is applicable. Interesting, right?
