Slate beauties

Portraits etched in slate by JB Ravello

Some time ago, I spotted some incredibly gorgeous portraits on Facebook and was blown away by their incredible detail and artistry. They had been made by Jean-Briac Ravello (the stone mason I featured last year in this blogpost) on slate! Yes, that’s right, they have been carved into slate, and this particular portrait, of rapper Xzibit, looks like this:

Quite stunning, isn’t it?

After a while, I saw images of more portraits, of this old man and of the very handsome ram, below. Asking Jean-Briac why he had chosen to do these portraits, he replied (with his usual off-hand humility) that they were just studies in light and shadows.

Apart from feeling quite green with envy at this level of artistry, I am also delighted that these slate beauties exist and will last, for they have been set in stone (well, in slate in this case) to do just that.

Jean-Briac Ravello will be exhibiting other pieces in Barcelona shortly. Meanwhile, check out his beautiful dishes and also an abstract sculpture at Siesta (Carrer Ferlandina 18, Barcelona) and his Facebook page and blog to keep up to date with his latest news.

B/W portraits

Black and white portraits on Barcelona's streets

Cyclists – Carrer Petritxol

Another week has flown by and the weekend is on our doorstep. Before I go off to rest and relax, I wanted to share these 4 B/W portraits with you. I hope you like them. The cyclists, found on a doorway in Carrer Petritxol, is a homage to the famous painting by Ramon Casas that hangs in the 4 Gats restaurant. If you’ve been, you’ll recognise it.

Girl – Carrer Mirallers

The other three are all found on the same little street, Carrer Mirallers, tucked away in the Born. A pretty girl with a piercing look…

Embrace – Carrer Mirallers

A smoking embrace on one of the shop blinds, and that genius of surrealism, Dalí himself, with his pointy whiskers, by street artist Balu (who also did the pretty girl – anyone know who she is? – above).

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

RICE for breakfast

Antony Perkins – Carrer del Carne

Happy Monday! How about a hearty breakfast to kick-start the week? In Hong Kong (where I lived for 4 years) this would mean a bowl of congee, the main ingredient of which is rice. So let’s have some RICE for breakfast, shall we? Of the kind you can find on Barcelona’s streets.

Who’s that girl? – Carrer del Carme

RICE has been active and I found a few new stencils just the other day, all in El Raval. He or she (doesn’t anybody know anything about this artist?) appears to enjoy making stencil portraits of famous people. Such as these three… Have a wonderful week, everyone!

Hipster girl – Carrer Grunyi

Another Friday has rocked up, and after a busy week, I am ready to bring on the weekend! Guess you are too? What are your plans? I am starting off with a sketching session this evening at 7 pm (at Caravelle, in case you’d like to join in), during which I will be doing my best to create portraits of my fellow sketchers…

Character study – Carrer Honduras

I’ll probably start off with something like this (above) and hopefully progress to something a little more defined.

Triplets – Carrer Honduras

Not sure I’ll manage anything good, such as these handsome fellas, on the walls of a former factory near Clot, which now functions as a cultural centre, but I will try my best.

The brother – Carrer Honduras

The older guy – Carrer Astùries

I certainly don’t expect to produce anything as picture perfect as this older guy, tucked behind a window grille in Gràcia, but wouldn’t mind being able to create a minimalist portrait as funky as the one below. As long as it was a good likeness. Who knows? I just hope I will be inspired!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

An empty plot

What’s this?

Last week, while I was taking photos around the Born, I stumbled on an empty plot on Carrer Canvis Nous. The plot itself is no news, for it has been empty for as long as I have lived in Barcelona. But what was a great surprise, is what I found…

Carrer Ciutat

Hello! How about some paper portraits today? Some are drawn, others stenciled, and yet others are photographs, yet they can all be found while walking around Barcelona. Fancy joining me for a tour of portraiture? Let’s go!

Alice in graffiti land

Carrer Doctor Dou

If you liked last Thursday’s post about C215, I think you’ll like this one too. For about one year now, I’ve been seeing graffiti by the Italian artist Alice Pasquini, who signs as AliCè. An illustrator, set designer and painter, she is based in Rome, but I get the impression she may be living in Barcelona at present (or maybe on and off) for new work pops up frequently in my neighborhood. Fancy getting to see a bit of Alice in graffiti land?
