A new street art form? Wallpapered!

I believe a new street art form has made an appearance on Barcelona’s streets, for I have discovered a couple of places that have been wallpapered! Take these two neighboring shop windows on Carrer Joaquin Costa, all done up in yellow leopard print and apparently singing a little ditty. Rather fetching, right?

Phone booths – Carrer de l’Or

And how about these completely wallpapered twin phone booths in Gràcia? Certainly looking much more interesting in yellow and black, and offering more privacy to their users (were it not that the phones are broken). In case someone missed the point of their ‘decorator’, one of the sides of this delightful example of street art clearly indicates that “this space is declared MINE”. Certainly done in a much nicer way than many of the tags around town, don’t you agree?

Hello Spring! You are always a welcome arrival! Longer days, rising temperatures, flowers blooming everywhere… Even Barcelona’s buildings are flowering in your honor, showing off various decorative techniques, such as the sgraffito in its two-tone glory (above), and an interior version which has been painted over in just one colour (below).

Some buildings boast colourful mosaics (above) with floral motives, while other, more humble ones, apply a cast iron flower to a simple door (below).

Wrought iron, here in a delicate example on the windows of Fundaciò Tàpies (above), and the bas-relief technique (below) applied to a single bud in a crown of leaves. All these gorgeous flowers are a tribute to the season that starts today: Hello Spring!

Carrer del Carme

Today is all about simple geometrical forms that I have found as decorative elements on various buildings around town. They can be just as beautiful as the more fanciful motifs, but then, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Hope you like ’em!
