XXL – Carrer Roc Boronat

While in the 22@ district recently, I couldn’t help but be delighted by all the street art that I found (and almost missed, remember?). So to kick-start this week (happy Monday, by the way) I thought I’d share what I found… enjoy!

Dusty with age – Carrer Àlaba

The areas of Barcelona that I frequent, don’t offer graffiti in XXL size, so catching this one (top photo) which protests against the development of 22@ on the backside of a building was a delight! It is more habitual to find blinds, such as this one on Carrer Àlaba, covered in spray paint. Nice to see an old(er) Pez still surviving.

Vacant lots and construction sites abound in Poble Nou, and especially in the 22@ district, and they are treasure troves of street art. See for yourself…

Padlocked

Hidden behind a metal fence and a padlocked gate on the corner of Carrer Almogàvers and Carrer Àlaba, a collection of stunning graffiti pieces are kept from sight.

Bubble cube

One of Barcelona’s more recent architectural gems is, in my opinion at least, the bubble cube that arose in the 22@ district and which is known as the Media-TIC building. It shimmers in the sun on the corner of Carrer Sancho d’Àvila and Carrer Roc Boronat with its futuristic bubble skin comprised of inflatable compartments made of ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluor Ethylene).

Quirky cladding

Designed by Barcelona-based architectural firm Cloud 9, it stands out from its neighbours with its quirky cladding, which provides both shade and thermal insulation.

Seeing green – Carrer Pere IV

Last Monday I went to the 22@ district to have a wander among the many buildings that have popped up over the past years, and discovered that several have been covered with shutters and louvres. Here they are, enjoy!
