The colour of Summer

Aqua - the colour of Summer in Barcelona

Carrer Banys Vells

There is no colour that evokes Summer to me quite like the colour aqua does. And after yesterday’s post, in which so many details appeared in this lovely color, I was in the mood for more example of the colour of Summer.

Carrer Sant Francesc de Paula

Aqua is a crisp colour that appears to exude coolness, or like this glass, reminds of crystal clear waters in shallow parts of the sea lapping onto a sandy beach.

It is also the colour that sets off a suntan like no other colour does, especially for those (like me) who have eyes in green or blue tones.

Here’s an aqua reminder to myself that I need to get into shape, and (below) a reflection of my love for ice cream – that most summery of pleasures.

Just two more days, and Summer will be officially here! Enjoy it to the max, everyone!

Barcelona goes pink

Pretty parasol – Carrer del Pi

Lately I have been seeing pink everywhere. In magazines, shops, the clothes that people wear, and it was even the colour of a pretty girl’s hair! Barcelona goes pink too, just check out these snapshots from around town…

Stained glass around Barcelona

Bunches – Ronda Sant Antoni

Happy Monday! I hope you had a great weekend and are ready to kick-start the week. I have some stained beauty for you today – a few examples of the incredibly beautiful stained glass windows from around Barcelona, starting with the lovely stained glass in a bay window of a residential building…

Diamonds fit for a king – Plaça del Rei

… followed by the colourful diamonds in a couple of chapel windows and the repetitive flower pattern in the lobby of the Palau de la Mùsica.

Lovely, aren’t they?

Pretty ladies – Palau de la Mùsica

You’ve probably seen photos of the very grand stained glass ceiling of the Palau de la Mùsica before. It never ceases to cause an impression, and I too could not resist a shot when I visited it a few years ago. Last but not least, the stunning effect of the beautiful rose window as seen from behind the statue of the virgin in the Santa Maria del Mar church.  My favourite of all the churches I have seen so far.

Have a great week, everyone!

Orange in Barcelona

Spotting orange things around Barcelona

Palau de la Mùsica

For Dutch nationals around the globe, today is a very special day. The queen is abdicating in favour of her son, and orange is the couleur du jour. I thought I’d join in the celebrations, with images of orange from around this wonderful city: orange in Barcelona.

Butano gas – Rambla del Raval

Butano gas bottles are so common in Spain, that their name (butano) has become the adjective of their orange colour. Wrapped around a couple of posts to alert of their presence, bright plastic webbing adds a touch of orange to the everyday.

House of Orange – Ronda de Sant Pau

A two-tone jigsaw pattern creates a striking effect on this house of orange on Ronda de Sant Pau, while an FGC sign stands tall, like a beacon, at the base of Tibidabo mountain. For those of you in the Netherlands: happy Queen’s Day! And for everyone else, happy Tuesday!

Hillside views

Steep street with stools

On a Carrer Margarit at the base of Montjuïc, there are some interesting hillside views. This part of the street is so steep, that dotted on its sidewalk are a bunch of metal stools, for people to take a seat and catch their breath, as they make their way up to the higher levels of this small mountain.

Pretty in pink

One such stool stands in front of a house, all pretty in pink and covered in pale green sgraffito details plus ditto blinds, that is only two floors high.

Green details

Swirly foliage and pretty flowers grace the walls of this lovely home and the door is daintily carved with ethereal shapes that merely hint at some kind of flowers. Its knocker, much more voluptuous, invites to tap tap and ask to be invited in to see what more beauty lies in store within the walls of this gracious house.

Knock knock

If an invitation isn’t forthcoming, then we can only resign ourselves to enjoy whatever other hillside views this spot has to offer…

Not as pink perhaps, but certainly not too bad either, for in the distance lies a prize: the glorious Sagrada Familia with its turrets and cranes pointing up to the sky.

In the distance…

Dear readers, I have a busy week ahead, with birthday celebrations and visits from family and friends. So I am going to have a mini holiday and enjoy myself and give my loved ones the attention they deserve. But not to worry! I’ll be back on Monday next week, and hope to delight you then with more Barcelona loveliness. Have a great week, everyone!
