Happy Friday! It looks like the weather gods are favourable this weekend, so I say: the beach or bust! Let’s soak up some sun and get some colour on our cheeks! Along the way, you might run into any of the sights I’ve rounded up for you today…

Gorgeous setting

Happy Monday! I hope you had a wonderful weekend! I’m happy to share images of a delightful dinner that I attended last Saturday:  the 2nd edition of  The Supper Club, a pop-up restaurant that is hosted semi-regularly and features different chefs from around the world.

The chosen venue for this edition of The Supper Club was an atelier close to the sea at Palo Alto studios, where a gorgeous setting was created by Tara Penke and Marianne Krauss and photographer Jordi Bernadó‘s stunning images were used as backdrop.

On this occasion chef Johann Wald was the guest chef who, alongside chef Jaime Riesco (who owns Picnic Restaurant), created the culinary delights that we were served at The Supper Club last Saturday.

Behind the scenes

While behind the scenes everything was being brought in readiness and hostess Tara Penke did some final checks of the gorgeous setting, the lights were dimmed and guests started arriving…

The venue: Palo Alto

Oysters with 3 different sauces, Bloody Mary shots, antipasti, a delicious seafood soup in a sourdough bread bowl, succulent veal wrapped in filo pastry and a delicious, palate cleansing blood orange sorbet with a pipette of gin were followed by cocktails and great musical mixes spun by DJ Fortuito.

Weekend weather

Barcelona's Spring cloudy skies

Passeig de Colom

Spring in Barcelona can be a little fickle (like in most parts of the world) and often brings cloudy skies, rain and chilly temperatures. Such will be the weekend weather according to those in the know, but that doesn’t mean you have to stay indoors… there is beauty in those cloudy skies too!

With any luck, the rays of the sun will be able to perforate the overcast skies and bits of blue make an appearance. Fingers crossed for dry evenings though, because I am going to do some al fresco dining this weekend… I’ll tell you more about it soon!

Basilica of the Cathedral

After yesterday’s post about graffiti pets and other animals, I thought it was high time to show you the local wildlife in Barcelona, which, as in most cities is mostly of the birdie variety (but also counts fish, here and there)…

… and has an abundance of pigeons, those cooing, poo-ing birds of a grey feather.

Much cuter, cheekier and noisier, are the cotorras (an Argentinian variety of parakeet) who roam the skies and make their homes (mostly) in Barcelona’s palm trees. They always bring a smile to my face.

But the big stars in Barcelona – mainly because they rule supreme in the skies and are so very predatory (they kill pigeons in mid-flight, did you know?) and also because they are such posers – are the seagulls.

See what I mean with the posing (after chasing away a couple of blackbirds and charming a couple of Japanese tourists)?

Heck, they even do it in mid-flight! ;)

Diving into the weekend

TWO!!!

3 Apr

.

It caught me completely by surprise, when last night I realised that the Cute Suite blog turned two yesterday. Two!!! Goodness, have two years really passed, since one Saturday morning in April I decided to start a blog to share things about Barcelona that I like? Apparently!

That deserved a celebration, and so I decided to postpone the post I had prepared for today until tomorrow, and prepare a different post for today…  I have just come back from the street, quickly uploaded the photos I took and whipped up this here little blog post, much later than normal, but here it is! A small collection of numbers 2 from around the area where I live, starting with the one on my street. Happy Birthday to the Cute Suite!

If I have managed to keep up the blogging until now, it’s all thanks to YOU, dear readers! Knowing you’re out there, checking out the blog, commenting, liking, signing up to be informed of updates, that is what keeps me going. Now… whaddaya say, would you like me to continue?

Barcelona Cute Suite Easter Shop Window at Escribà

Eye spy…

Remember Easter as a child? Hunting for eggs, painting them in all sorts of colours? Breakfast tables decorated with flowers, eggs and chicks and bunnies? These days Easter is not a holiday I celebrate in any meaningful way, other than to relish having a few days off, but I have fond memories of the way we celebrated it when I was a child. Trawling around my photo archives recently, I came across a few images that brought me right back to those days in a flash, so it seems a good idea to share them with you here, today.

Taken in March 2010, they show the shop window of Escribà (their shop on Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes 546) which was decorated for Easter. Done in a very simple way, and eschewing the usual overdose of Monas de Pascua that most pastry shops tend to have, instead, Escribà focused on two things: eggs and chicks. In a BIG way. And I love it! If you’re in Barcelona, check out what they have done for this shop window this year, for no doubt it will be interesting. And if you’re not, check out the Escribà website. It’s cute!

Happy Easter everyone! Enjoy the long weekend, and see you here, on Tuesday!

Barcelona Cute Suite 9 years in Barcelona

Barceloneta

Happy Monday! I am celebrating today! Why, you ask? Well, today it is 9 years since I arrived in Barcelona! So I thought I’d share with you some images from my archives and reflect on these past years…

There have been many visits to the beach, to enjoy the sun and chill as well as gaze our at the horizon to calm stormy thoughts, and walk along the promenade in all kinds of weather.

Carrer Notariat

It has rained, sometimes incredibly heavily, and there have been tears every now and then when things got a little too overwhelming, or when joy made my eyes brim with the salty stuff.

Carrer Nou de la Rambla

Many gorgeous sunrises and sunsets have been enjoyed, and the spectacle of fluffy, multi-coloured clouds documented from my former home on Carrer Nou de la Rambla. (I still miss that stunning view!)

But all in all, of these past 9 years, the balance is positive, and there are many days when Barcelona offers me bliss! :)

Román Yñán at Openhouse Gallery

Intimate shots

What better to do on a rainy day such as today, than tuck yourself up indoors and snuggle with your nearest and dearest? Well, there is an alternative, actually, and that is to go and see a very intimate collection of photos by Román Yñán at the Openhouse Gallery.

Then and now

The collection is titled “Hola me llamo Romàn y hago fotos a mi familia” (hello my name is Román and I take photos of my family) and invites us to reflect on the fact that although we are all different and lead different lives, in essence we all are the same, and this is often visible through our family snaps.

As my photos do not do this lovely collection any justice, I suggest you contact either Román Yñán or Openhouse Gallery (part of Openhouse project) to arrange a private viewing. The exhibit will be on for a while yet, but you don’t want to miss this one, so go see it!
