Watchful red

While in Amsterdam last weekend, I spent some time with my nephew and niece at one of the city’s many well-appointed playgrounds, in particular the one at Weteringschans, where gorgeous murals livened up the brick walls on one of its sides with some playground pets. Simply wonderful!

Mirrors

Happy Monday, everyone! I have been away on a short trip, and in the next days I will share some impressions with you. Starting today, with some mosaic spheres which I found on a very famous square… can you guess where I was these days?

Eye see you!

As far as eyes go, brown has always been my favourite color, so it’s not surprising that this one caught my eye!

Canal houses

With this housey sphere, I think you can pretty much guess where I have been. And if not, the one below will leave no doubt whatsoever! ;)

Have a wonderful week, everyone!

Manodesanta a crochet art exhibit at Miscelanea, Barcelona

Manodesanta @ Miscelanea

Last Sunday, while out on a stroll, I popped in to Miscelanea and found a delightful exhibit. Messages in crochet by Marial Soy, showcasing technique, irony and things to say.

I loved seeing such and old school craft form in a completely new guise, and just had to share it with you.

Old school, new art

The messages on each piece made me chuckle, and some pieces I thought were really cool. But more than anything, I was delighted to see the humble crochet taking centre stage in one of Barcelona’s hip and happening art galleries.

Fly Return

If you’re in town, then head over to Miscelanea on the double, for it is on until this Sunday. If you’re not, too bad! Maybe there is something along these lines happening where you are? If so, please let me know – I’ll happily share it with all of you, my dear blog friends.

Miscelanea is on Carrer de la Guardia 10, 08001 Barcelona. I’m going to keep an eye out for more work by Marial Soy, for I really like the stuff she creates. Check out her website to see what I mean…

Artful faces on Barcelona's walls

Hipster girl – Carrer Grunyi

Another Friday has rocked up, and after a busy week, I am ready to bring on the weekend! Guess you are too? What are your plans? I am starting off with a sketching session this evening at 7 pm (at Caravelle, in case you’d like to join in), during which I will be doing my best to create portraits of my fellow sketchers…

Character study – Carrer Honduras

I’ll probably start off with something like this (above) and hopefully progress to something a little more defined.

Triplets – Carrer Honduras

Not sure I’ll manage anything good, such as these handsome fellas, on the walls of a former factory near Clot, which now functions as a cultural centre, but I will try my best.

The older guy – Carrer Astùries

I certainly don’t expect to produce anything as picture perfect as this older guy, tucked behind a window grille in Gràcia, but wouldn’t mind being able to create a minimalist portrait as funky as the one below. As long as it was a good likeness. Who knows? I just hope I will be inspired!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

At the exit of the Passeig de Gràcia metro station on Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes you can find art on every step at the moment. Be sure to have a look, for I’m not sure how long it will be there for…

Magnesia

On a rather bland, chamfered corner, at the top end of Gràcia, a delightful surprise lies in store for those who enter Magnesia. For this surprisingly bright shop, with its triangular floor plan and stunning floor tiles, converts this unobtrusive spot into a haven of all things (well) illustrated.

Beautiful illustrations are everywhere you look in Magnesia, applied to paper, embellishing tea towels, coasters, note books, pretty trays…

Well-rounded collection

Magnesia also offers a very lovely range of ceramics which tell stories thanks to the illustrations that have been transferred onto them.

Big fans of Letterpress and Hammerpress, it is no surprise that at Magnesia you can find many items printed with this artisanal technique, ranging from charming cards to nifty calendars and pretty paper doll packs.

Travel-ready

Magnesia also boasts a textile corner where you can find bolts of fabric (mostly from Japan and the US – some of which were designed by Lisa Congdon), cushions, and pretty handmade handbags with delightful vintage fabrics.

Local illustration artists but also many from abroad are represented at Magnesia, displayed with great taste in a space that feels uncluttered, despite having a great deal to offer.

Illustrated ceramics

There is so much to be discovered at Magnesia! Tea towels, placemats, jewelry (not shown), puzzles, cards, posters, plates, bowls, funky totes (you know that you need another to add to your collection, right?) and pretty handbags.

You can find Magnesia on Carrer Torrent de l’Olla 192 (at the top end of Gràcia, just opposite to Lukumas). It opens Mon-Fri: 10.30-14.00 + 16.30-20.00 and Sat: 10.00-14.00. For more info and updates check out their blog and Facebook page, and feel free to follow them on Pinterest and Twitter.

Plaça de Lluis Millet

Hello Spring! You are always a welcome arrival! Longer days, rising temperatures, flowers blooming everywhere… Even Barcelona’s buildings are flowering in your honor, showing off various decorative techniques, such as the sgraffito in its two-tone glory (above), and an interior version which has been painted over in just one colour (below).

Barcelona Cute Suite - Fashionable blinds

Baixada de Viladecols

In Barcelona there are some very fashionable blinds indeed. I kid you not, for if  you check some of the latest street fashion shots by The Sartorialist you’ll see that this ethnic blanket motif (above) is one of the big things on the street right now.

Baixada de Viladecols :: 2

Popular online shops such as J Crew, are showing some prints and motifs in hot pinks, yellows and azure blues  that could have been inspired by these two blinds (above and below). Or were these fashionable blinds inspired by fashion? We’d have to ask their creators to find out…
