This past weekend most of Barcelona has been getting ready to celebrate one of its patron saint days, Sant Jordi (which took place yesterday), but part of the local population had something quite different to celebrate: Bangla New Year.
Celebrations took place on Plaça dels Àngels, in front of the MACBA, and as other years, it was a big social event for these hard-working residents of Barcelona. Food, music and getting dressed to the nines in traditional finery and showing off what jewellery they have (all at once) are essential parts of the get-together, as are seeing and being seen. They had fun, and so did I, observing them and taking the following photos:
As other years, the food was delicious, the music loud, the male audience exalted and the females demure. But most of all, Bangla New Year was an explosion of colour and a delightful feast for the eyes and souls of those who looked on or participated.
Tell me what you think...
