Great support

Rambla de Catalunya

Happy Monday! I hope you had a great weekend! With the Oscars approaching and yesterdays BAFTAs already having been handed out, the buzz around who is expected the win those golden statuettes is increasing. I thought I’d share my nominees for the best in a supporting role with you here, today. Here are some that offer great support to the gorgeous buildings around Barcelona – enjoy!

Now I suppose there ought to be several categories for these grand supporters, but I’ll dispense with those and just show you some I spotted around town and fancied sharing with you. Above, a mixture of the very large and leafy and the smaller and more simple supporters all but dwarf the lintel above the door that is found underneath.

Carrer de Bergara

The supporters on Carrer Bergara are relatively simple in comparison to the first image, but we find another leafy example on Carrer de Roselló, where two columns have been used to keep the bay window/balcony on the first floor aloft.

Carrer de Valencia

Another column (above), with an almost palmtree-like effect, forms the support for the corner balconies above it, and (below) less is more for some chunky yet simple struts that have minimal leafy and floral decorative elements.

Curls appear to be the theme in the supports in stone (above) and cast iron (below), both of which can be found along Rambla de Catalunya.

And a mass of beautifully carved leaves form the very decorative support of a grand first-floor balcony on Passeig de Gràcia. My favourites are the ‘palm tree’ on  Carrer Valencia, and this bunch of fern leaves on Passeig de Gràcia – which are yours?
