TLC needed

Carrer Villena

Last weekend, I was treated and spoiled for my birthday, and surrounded with tender loving care by persons very dear to me, and I have been basking in the afterglow of their love all week, so I thought I’d share with you a very beautiful building that is in need of a fair dose of TLC. Are you ready?

The building lies just opposite of the back entrance to the Zoo, on Carrer Wellington, on the corner of Carrer Villena, and looks like it hasn’t received much love over the years, despite the fact that there are still people living there. The only new additions are the fence that blocks off the alley between this building and the one next door, and the video camera on one of the columns on the ground floor (above), as well as the sign on the wall on the image below.

Rusty

All things iron are rusty but still solid, and the arched undersides of the various gallery balconies appear to be in sound state (above), despite the blotchy marks of humidity. Worn away plaster shows the building is not constructed of large slabs of stone, but rather of bricks and subsequently embellished (below).

Galleries

The windows and accesses to the galleries on the lower floors have been bricked up, but evidence of life can still be found on the floors above, where plants grace the railings and laundry (not seen here) flutters in the light sea breeze (we’re not very far from the beach here). The lovely window bars on the windows at ground level are protection enough from squatters and homeless seeking for a bit of shelter…

Window

… while the building’s appearance on Carrer Wellington is of quiet normalcy and not much disrepair. Graffiti with a sense of humor has been applied to the doors, adding a smile and a couple of eyes to its dark brown surface. I wonder how long it’ll be before this lovely building is fixed up and brought to proper life again, as it deserves? Time will tell, I guess…

Have a great weekend, everyone! I’ll be back on Monday with more Barcelona loveliness. See you then!
