Evening shopping

Ohlala Plaza - Carrer Valldonzella

If there is one thing I really like about the dark days before Christmas, it is the cosy atmosphere on the streets in the evening, when shops are still open and ablaze with light. Recently, I found myself taking images of shops in the evening, and so I thought I’d share some with you, of shops that I think are worth a visit for the quality or uniqueness of their products. Enjoy!

In Spain the concept of second hand shopping didn’t start to take off until recently, and in fact, has acquired a kind of cult status that has driven up the prices, making it a rather costly pursuit. Nevertheless, you’ll find something much more unique at a second hand shop, and will be putting a discarded item to good use, than if you go to Zara (for example) to buy your clothes, or shop for presents. Ohlalala Plaza on Carrer Valldonzella is a great shop, and sells not only a huge range of second hand clothes, but also furniture, art and fabulous magazines dedicated to art, fashion, graffiti, and more…

Chandal - Carrer Valldonzella

Also on Carrer Valldonzella, but a little further up the road, you’ll find Chandal, which sells second hand items, and is specialised in vintage toys and cameras, books about photography and some cute crockery and nick nacks. Their range of cameras is really good and their vintage toys (if possible) even better!

Bassol - Carrer Doctor Dou

Bassol is where you’ll find sunglasses or prescription glasses that are as stylish as you are, and will be attended by friendly staff. Their range of gorgeous glasses is not cheap, but they often offer a discount, and they are very well stocked with great styles, so they are worth checking out if you’re in the neighborhood.

Camper - Carrer Elisabets

If you want to buy Spanish shoes there are several brands you could go for. Camper is one of the more ethical ones, and has shops dotted around town. My personal favourite is their shop on Carrer Elisabets, which has a gorgeous map of the Old Town on their back wall, and offers good quality shoes at acceptable prices.

La Variété - Carrer Pintor Fortuny

For cute items from around the globe, in simple yet colourful styles, La Variété is a great one-stop shop. Prices are very acceptable, and they do their best to implement fair trade values to all sourced items.

La Central - Carrer Elisabets

Books are always a good gift, and for great cookery, coffee table or children’s books (as well as literature in several languages) La Central is a very good option. Just around the corner from the Cute Suite, you can find one of their shops on Carrer Elisabets (it also has an entrance on Plaça Vicenç Martorell), housed in what used to be part of a former convent.

Teranyina - Carrer Notariat

In Carrer Notariat you can find several great places to shop, such as Aizuri, Openhouse or Il·lacions, but also Teranyina, a weaving workshop where weaving and felting techniques are taught. Luckily for us, they also sell items produced in this gorgeous workshop, mostly scarves with beautiful finishes.

El Ingenio - Carrer Rauric

El Ingenio, on Carrer Rauric, is a wonderful shop, where you’ll find all you need for clowns, jugglers, costumes, and toys that require various levels of dexterity. Most products are made of noble (i.e. natural) materials, and costumes are sewn at the back of the shop by staff that have been a part of this business for many years.

Of course there are many more shops around town, but I just wanted to give you a taste of evening shopping. Hope you enjoyed it, and wish you good and sensible shopping!
