Palau Robert

Palau Robert

At the top end of Passeig de Gràcia, on the left hand side, a proud, elegant palace stands on the corner with Avinguda Diagonal. This palace is called Palau Robert.

Built at the beginning of the 20th Century, the palace belonged to Robert Robert i Surís (no, that is not a typo, tee hee!), an influential aristocrat, politician and businessman. Nowadays it houses an exhibition centre with three halls, a concert hall, as well as the Information Centre for Catalonia, including the city’s tourism bureau.

Gilded door

But the reason I want you to step through its entrance, which is flanked by gilded iron doors and walk through this pretty passageway, which always has gorgeous art objects on display in the large display case, lies at the end of the passage…

Arches

After walking under the arched marble ceiling and reaching the end of the passage, you’ll see why I’ve brought you here today. There is a delightful (almost hidden) and sizable garden behind the palace. A veritable oasis among the bustle of the busy avenues that are Passeig de Gràcia and Avinguda del Diagonal.

Garden

Well tended, with lots of lush green plants on all sides and plenty of benches to take a rest, this garden is filled with all sorts of (palm) trees, exotic flowering bushes and orange trees.

Almost hidden

The profusion is such, that the surrounding buildings are all but hidden from view. In a busy and crowded city such as Barcelona, this is a great blessing!

String installation

And to add interest to this lovely garden, there are various permanent and also temporary art exhibits and installations dotted around the garden.

So a visit to this place is not only a peaceful experience, but also a cultural one.

In all honesty, I have to say I don’t go often, as I don’t find myself in this neighbourhood all that much. But when I am in the area, I always step inside this lovely place to check out what’s on display in the palace and have a quiet wander in the gardens, before moving on.

Have a lovely weekend dear friends!
